SafeMed II Regional Assignment for BPC – November 2009

BPC have been entrusted with increasing the visibility of the EU-financed MEDA Regional Safe Med II Project across the Southern Mediterranean Region. The SafeMed Project is being implemented by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), a regional activity centre of the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan administered by the International Maritime Organization.

The two year assignment covers communications consultancy, the design and production of newsletters and collateral communications material and obtaining media coverage in international media across the Region.

‘The Mediterranean Sea is a major shipping area with more than 300,000 port calls per annum and more than 10,000 ships transiting very year. Differences in the implementation of international maritime conventions can lead to an increased risk of accidents and in a deeply interlinked Mediterranean environment, damage to one area of the sea impacts every other area’, commented Mr Frédéric Hebert, Director of REMPEC.

‘Such a regional challenge requires a regional response. SafeMed aims to reduce maritime accidents and pollution through coordinated action by providing a level-playing field for all stakeholders in the area, improving access to information for all, offering training and assistance, and promoting a common platform for best practices in Mediterranean coastal states. Effective communication and a higher visibility of this action thus assume strategic importance’.

Commented Carmel Bonello, BPC’s Director of Public Relations, ‘for some time our Agency has been assisting clients with assignments in other markets and we are delighted to be awarded the SafeMed II Project by REMPEC. We will be liaising with journalists and media organizations across the Region, from Turkey to Morocco, leveraging further BPC’s experience as a hub agency.’
